HardwareLuxx.de: Excellent Hardware Award - Ein Zwerg mit Power und Charme

Fazit und Empfehlungen

Positive Punkte
+ sehr gute Performance
+ gute Stabilität
+ gute Ausstattung (Firewire, Digitalsound, USB 2.0, Serial ATA,
   10/100mbit Ethernet)
+ hochwertige Verarbeitung des Gehäuses
+ Overclocking-Optionen
+ Geringe Betriebslautstärke

Translation of the conclusion:

(...) Once again, we take the Shuttle  SB61G2 barebone system to our heart: the craftmanship and size is already known, but everytime you are enthusiastic about this power dwarf. (...) With good audio features, Firewire, USB 2.0 and Serial ATA this small system is very well equipped. The 10/100 MBit Ethernet is absolutly sufficient. The PCI-Slot can be used for a TV card and in the AGP slot accepts even the most powerful graphics card.

We also like the commendable performance: Despite its small size this system is on a par with with other Springdale-Mainboards, when you use an external graphics card. Also the BIOS is good, even though it is one of the first versions. Overclocking setting are available now, too. We could reach the maximum FSB setting of 255 MHz without problems. An other point is the noise: we think that the fan of the power supply makes less noise. After starting the system the fan runs at high speed for a short time and then, during normal operation, it is wonderful silent. (...)

+ very high Performance
+ good stability
+ good equipment (Firewire, digital audio, USB 2.0, Serial ATA,
   10/100mbit Ethernet)
+ good craftmanship of the case
+ Overclocking-Features
+ Low noise during operation

(...) Due to the power and charm which is inside this small dwarf, we are convinced that it deserves  the HardwareLuxx "Excellent Hardware" award.

Hexus.net: providing desktop performance in a designer cube

Shuttle are on to a winner with the XPC series of Small Form Factor (SFF) PCs. (...)

The SB61G2 is Shuttle's vision of a truly high-performance small-form-factor PC. By borrowing heavily from the new Springdale chipset, the SB61G2 is able to amalgamate some of the more desirable features into the cute little package. The most notable of these, in our opinion, is the inclusion of direct S-ATA support stemming from the ICH5 SouthBridge. The lack of space in the SB61G2 is almost perfect for the thin, slinky S-ATA cables. Additionally, great care has been taken with the placement of various headers and ports. Shuttle have learned how to make a decent SFF PC via trial and error, and we feel as the present iteration are pretty damn good with respect to design. (...)

Performance-wise, the SB61G2 didn't disappoint with a discrete Radeon 9800 Pro hogging the AGP port. Performance was just where we'd have put it beforehand, that is, sandwiched between the Canterwood and i845PE (200FSB) chipsets. The very fact that such performance can be attained from such a little package is a bewildering thought. You can add whatever extra the cube doesn't feature by utilising the single PCI slot.

The Shuttle XPC series carry on their aim of providing desktop performance in a designer cube. Pretty much everything you could wish for is in place (bar the video-out). The performance bar has been put up a notch with the dual channel Springdale chipset providing the real driving oomph. Shuttle have listened to their prospective buyers by giving the user some flexibility in core voltages. (...)

+ The fastest Shuttle XPC yet
+ Sleek looks, great construction
+ Features ahoy
+ Voltage adjustment
+ The ultimate LAN box. Serves a multitude of uses

Hardware Upgrade Italy: Extremely interesting for LAN party / living room

Hardware Upgrade Italy

26. May 2003
Conclusion (translated)
The Tests suite we performed has outlined the huge potential power of SB61G2 Shuttle system (...) The integrated video implies a light decrease in performances, because of shared memory; this feature doesn’t allow you to get performance high enough to be used for last generation videogaming, but it seems to be the perfect solution for Office and Home application. The demanding video gamer, anyway, finds the new Shuttle Barebone an extremely interesting solution for Lan Party, once he uses the Shuttle Mini PC together with a last generation AGP graphics card. (...)
The performances analysys confirms the Shuttle SB61G2 at the top of the Shuttle mini-PC systems line, since it offers all the main features of Springdale platform, in particular the 800MHz bus support and the dual channel modes for memory.
In this model we also found the typical elements which Shuttle applies to its own product concept for mini-PC: extremely refined design, good for using the product in the living room, near a TV, and good performances. The system offers a wide range of applications, also thanks to the AGP slot which allows easily to install a better performing VGA if necessary. The system is not suggested for those who are particularly interested in expandibility, obviously a feature which a compact system can’t offer.
The system price (...) so high when you consider the product performances, versatility and elegance.
