Samsung HD401LJ SATA II 400GB Hard disk with 16MB Cache

Samsungs successful hard disk series SpinPoint T133 has more than 400 GByte of disk space. The three-discs-system stands for high performance, reliability and system stability coupled with low heat emissions and great value for money. This three-discs-system with a 16 MByte Cache rotates at 7200 Rpm and will be offered with SATA-II 3.0 Gbps including NCQ-Support.

The disks operate practically noiselessly and have a standard response time of 8.9 ms, which represents a very good performance rating. Users that require high data transfer rates while utilising multiple accesses simultaneously will particularly appreciate the time-optimized command lines of SATA with NCQ and transfer rates of up to 300 MB per second. The employment of the new TMR-write-read-heads (Tunneling Magneto Resistance) means that the hard disk is even more reliable and powerful than standard hard disks. The first independent tests by leading German IT-magazines have confirmed the enormous potential of the new Samsung drives.

Samsung offers a 4-year warranty for their hard disks with an exchange service. The recommend retail price for the SATA-II Version with 16 MByte Cache is €163.00.

In order to lower the noise level of the hard disks and to further protect saved data, Samsung has patented its very own efficient, high-performance technologies. For example:

  • NoiseGuard™ - a combination of technologies that reduce noise levels at critical points to a minimum while simultaneously lowering the power consumption to a minimum. To achieve this the shaft engine is mounted in liquid and runs almost soundlessly. Vibrations are almost completely eliminated by a special dampening material, and the case has been specially built for optimal air circulation.
  • SilentSeek™ - reduces the noise of the actuator during data transfers with very smooth, frictionless movements. In contrast with other technologies SilentSeek™ has almost no negative effects on performance.
  • ImpacGuard™ - was designed to prevent the swing of the actuator in stand-by mode and eliminate the danger of dreaded “Head-Crashes“. As a result of this technology the hard disks of the SpinPoint-T133 family have a shock resistance in stand-by mode of up to 300 G, and up to 63 G in operating mode (both for 2 ms).

Conventional GMR-systems (Giant Magneto Resistance) are only able to vary their magnetic resistance up to 20 per cent, which limits them to a comprimation of 100 Gbit per square-inch. TMR-Systems on the other hand are able to change their magnetic resistance up to 50 per cent, and consequently offer data comprimation of more than 100 Gbit per square-inch. The read/write heads have special built-in electronic components - two layers of ferromagnetic material, which are separated by an ultra thin isolation layer. Utilising the outer magnetic field, the direction of the Spin (binary „0“ or binary „1“) of the magnetic layers can be controlled independently of each other. In GMR-technology used up to present, this was not possible due to the parallel direction of the spin. The advantage of TMR-Technology is, besides its significant higher temperature stability, a very high spin polarisation and a more precise operation necessary for higher storage density.
