Power lies in silence

Power lies in silence

Concentrated studying is not possible in a noisy environment. This applies especially for Bremen, Bremen Lehe to be exact. This is where the Public and University Library of Bremen (Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Bremen / SuUB) is resident. It provides literature and information for the University of Bremen (Universität Bremen) and any of Bremen’s colleges and academies (Bremer Hochschulen) including the college of Bremerhaven (Hochschule Bremerhaven). As it is required in any libraries: silence is the key for effective studying.

A fact that not only applies to more than 36.000 users that search for information in 3.15 Million different media regularly, but also for regular visitors using the workstations of the library. More than 350 PCs are currently used in the library and 220 units of them are Shuttle XPCs! Since August 2003, the library banks on SFF PCs that barely have the size of a shoebox with a surface size of an A4 sheet of paper only. 140 workstations are equipped with Shuttle XPCs that are available for internet search and multimedia applications for both library users and to the public.

The remaining units are used for administration purposes. It’s the PCs that play an important part when it comes to silence, as Dr. Martin Blenke, responsible for IT and e-media at the Public and University Library of Bremen (Staats- und Universitätsbibliothek Bremen / SuUB) explains: "The main reason of using Shuttle PCs was apart from the price their effective cooling technology." The integrated ICE heatpipe cooling solution takes care of a low noise level – an important aspect, considered that 64 PCs are used.

The models Shuttle XPC Barebone SS50, SS51G, SB51G, SS56G and SS58G from the varied line-up of SFF PCs are currently used, but the computer expert sees even more advantages apart from the low noise level: "Using Shuttle XPC Barebones impoves our logistics strongly. This includes purchase, storage, delivery and finally the disposal of the PCs." No doubt, the Shuttle XPC Barebones come in small boxes that cut down of lot of storage space and are easy to carry as well. No more worrying about moving heavy PCs.

Its not only the library itself that benefits from the Shuttle XPC Barebones, also the users enjoy digital content, thanks to the large number of interfaces the SFF PCs from Shuttle offer: "We wanted to make sure that users have fast access to any important interfaces such as Audio, USB that are available right in the front panel." Users can conveniently plug in external devices like USB sticks or head phones without disturbing anyone else, since effective studying requires a quiet environment.
