VIA Hardware: Full rating

Full rating: 5 out of 5!

Pros

  • Aluminum Case
  • Tight integration
  • Firewire
  • TV Out
  • Ethernet
  • Attractive looks
  • Front USB and Audio
  • Quietness

Cons: None really

(...) The SV24 was designed with the OEM/System integrator in mind; it combines many features that are usually found integrated on high end OEM computers, IE Firewire. The case is very attractive being made out of all aluminum with frontal USB and audio ports. Coupled with a VIA C3 processor you can have an ultra quiet and ultra cool PC system capable of running with minimal fans. If the C3 doesn’t offer the power you need, then you can couple the SV24 with a Pentium 3 1 GHz and give the onboard graphics a slight boost. Whether you are an OEM/system integrator or just a PC enthusiast, the SV24 barebones is definitely worth a look. Thanks to the all aluminum case, the SV24 comes out very light and is fit for LAN parties. (...) If you aren’t into LAN parties, there are other uses for the SV24. (...) entertainment center. The SV24 would make a great MP3 player on the road or in the house.
From an OEM/System integrator standpoint, the SV24 would save them a ton of money since it has everything integrated onboard, thus saving costs for add-in cards. (...) With 2 onboard Firewire ports, the expansion capabilities are endless. If you're in an office environment, you can buy a few external 100GB Firewire HD's and daisy chain up to 32 of them and use the SV24 as a file/storage server. Just imagine 32 of these in your office.
To sum things up, we liked the SV24 a lot; it (...) offers an abundance of features. We highly suggest the SV24 if you’re looking for a new toy or are an OEM/System Integrator. In the past year we’ve been very impressed with Shuttle Products and the SV24 is another product to add to the list.

Tech-Report.com: Top-Ranking - 11 out of 11

The Tech Report
www.tech-report.com/...
October, 23rd 2001
Conclusions: Top Ranking
It's tough to evaluate the SV24, because there's nothing else quite like it, as far as I know (...) the SV24 creates a whole new class of PC, and it fulfills its own concept especially well. (...) If hardware vendors are paying attention, the SV24 ought to be the first of many systems in a new class of mini-PCs. I know the Mac cubes failed, but hey, they were Macs. The SV24 is an open platform, the foundation for a hundred different products from a hundred different OEMs and PC hobbyists. All of that is enough to earn the SV24 the highest honor we can grant here at TR: a top ranking on our world-famous 11-point scale. No, the SV24 isn't perfect, but it's good enough - and innovative enough - to garner an 11.

Lost Circuits: Smallest fully functional PC available

Lost Circuits

October, 24th 2001
(...) the currently smallest fully functional PC available. Not geared towards performance but rather towards silent operation and a bare minimum power consumption, the SV24 integrates graphics, sound, network, firewire and USB on the size of a shoebox. The custom-designed case makes extremely good use of the space available with intelligent features like a sliding HDD tray. Minimum size appears to be dictated mostly by the format of e.g. the CD/DVD ROM that needs to be accomodated. Using a VIA C3 800, the overall performance is more than adequate for any office / multimedia system (...)

VIAArena.com: The little box has got just about everything

VIA Arena
www.viaarena.com/...
November, 19th 2001
It's so small it was like a fake PC, like a toy or something. Like one of those horrible gaming consoles you plug into your TV! Being a PC Gamer I was a bit dubious. But then I noticed all the little switches and sockets on the front and back. The little box has got just about everything. I looked down at the full tower case sitting next to the tv and wondered if this little, much more attractive box could replace it for my surround sound, MP3 and DVD playing. And what else can it be used for? It was light so I was thinking, wouldn't it be so handy to take it along to LAN events.
