Abschaltung bei CPU-Überhitzung (nur für Athlon XP)

Das Mainboard AK38N hat eine integrierte Hardware-Schutzschaltung, das bei Verwendung eines Athlon XP Prozessors die Spannungsversorgung des Systems bei Überhitzung abschalten kann. Hierfür kommt der "Attansic ATTP10240" Chip zum Einsatz, der die Temperaturdiode des Athlon XP-Prozessors auswertet und bei einem ungewöhnlichen Anstieg der Temperatur das Netzteil abschaltet. Diese spezielle Technik basiert rein auf Hardware und kann - anders als bei BIOS- oder Software-gesteuerten Lösungen - nicht deaktiviert werden. Dieser hervorragende Schutzschaltkreis bietet zusätzliche Sicherheit für Prozessor und System. Nach der Abschaltung leutet die Indikator-LED "LED 3" (neben dem Disketten-Anschluß) und nach Überprüfung von Kühlkörper und Lüfter kann das System wieder eingeschaltet werden. Diese Schutzschaltung entbindet den Anwender allerdings nicht von dem sorgfältigen Umgang mit der Kühlvorrichtung, da ein 100%-iger Überhitzungsschutz niemals gewährleistet werden kann.

166/333MHz FSB nur mit DDR333-Speicher

Bei einer externen CPU-Taktfrequenz von 166MHz (man spricht auch von 333MHz Double-Data-Rate) sind aufgrund der Beschaffenheit des beim AK38N verwendeten KT333CF-Chipsatzes keine asynchronen Speichertakt-Einstellungen möglich, so daß der Speicher zwangsweise ebenfalls mit 166MHz (DDR333) getaktet wird. Andere Speicherfrequenzen sind bei diesem CPU-Takt also nicht einstellbar.

Northbridge VIA KT333CF

Der bei AK38N eingesetzte Chipsatz ist Pin-to-Pin-kompatibel mit KT400, weshalb AK38N (KT333CF) und AK39N (KT400) auch exakt das gleiche Layout haben. Als Unterschied sei genannt, daß KT400 den AGP 8X und 4X Modus unterstützt, während KT333/CF lediglich AGP 4X und 2X unterstützt. Beide Chipsätze unterstützen allerdings nicht die älteren AGP-Grafikkarten mit 3,3V-Interface.
