FiringSquad http://firingsquad.gamers.com/... 21. May 2003 | Shuttle’s SB61G2 is the new pinnacle of small form factor products for the Pentium 4 platform. Its 865G chipset is the latest offering from Intel. It’s actually a tribute to Shuttle’s engineers that we’re able to talk to you about the SB61G2 on Springdale’s launch day (...) This gives Shuttle a significant jump on the competition. While others are working on their first generation Springdale-based product, Shuttle is working on their second generation of products supporting Intel’s 800MHz chipsets (note the use of plural pronunciation, Shuttle has a lot of upcoming hardware in the pipeline). When equipped with an 800MHz bus, 3.0GHz Pentium 4 processor, RADEON 9800 PRO, and half a gig of dual-channel DDR400 memory, the Shuttle SB61G2 breaks the small form factor PC sound barrier, rivaling anything available on the desktop and putting the SB61G2 in a class of its own. Can you believe this little box packs more power than the #200+ Granite Bay motherboards that were state-of-the-art just a few months ago? It’s amazing how far technology has advanced in such a short timeframe. The SB61G2 has just made quite a few high dollar workstations obsolete. The diminutive size of the SB61G2 gives it a world of potential uses in applications ranging from gaming to distributed computing. Home theater buffs have always gone wild with uses for these boxes, and with Personal Video Station now a standard feature these users can turn their XPC into a personal video recorder at prices previously unheard of. (...) It’s like having an M-16 rifle in the size of a handgun. It’s this type of innovation that goes into any Editor’s Choice product. And when it’s executed this brilliantly in performance, feature set, and price, awarding the SB61G2 our Editor’s Choice Award is a no-brainer. In a way, it’s fitting that the SB61G2 comes from a company named Shuttle, as they’ve literally taken the small form factor platform to new heights. We can’t wait to see what they think of next. |

| Call me melodramatic, but it is my belief that the SB61G2 is the most important cube yet to come out of Shuttle. Sure, I know what you're thinking. You're thinking Vincent Vega: "That's a bold statement." True, but it's one I intend to back up. Shuttle has reached a new pinnacle in time to market with the SB61G2, and has also introduced the last big feature that hardcore enthusiasts have been waiting for in cube computers. The SB61G2 does well here, scoring on par with the other AGP-based 865 configurations. Conclusions Fazit (Übersetzung) |
Hardware Zone www.hardwarezone.com/... 20. June. 2003 | Conclusion Finally, we were able to review a Pentium 4 SFF system sporting the latest chipset that showcases the true power of these miniature systems. Previously tested Pentium 4 SFF systems were only equipped with older chipset platforms such as the SiS 651 and Intel 845G, which do constrain the system performance to a certain extent compared with current chipset platforms. As we unveiled the performance in our results section using the same processor frequency but utilizing the newer 800MHz FSB and DDR400 dual-channel memory in contrast to older systems based on the 533MHZ PSB and DDR 266/333, the Shuttle XPC SB61G2 outscored the Intel 845G platform by 12% in office productivity and content creation tasks. The margin grew to over 20% in our SPECViewPerf benchmark simulating professional rendering application tests. Gaming scores improved anywhere from 50% to 100% thanks to the new Intel Extreme Graphics 2 core in the 845G chipset. However do note that the gaming results are still a far cry from what a GeForce4 MX 440 can achieve and as such, the built-in graphics is still not a viable 3D gaming solution. In terms of system design and features, the Shuttle XPC was outstanding and we grew to enjoy it even more after being immersed in a wider variety of SFF systems recently. The XPC series promoted easy system building due to an ingenious system design, efficient heat removal from the CPU via Shuttle’s I.C.E. heat-pipe system and has good overall ventilation. Furthermore, the Shuttle motherboard’s AGP slot positioning allows long AGP graphics card to be installed effortlessly- this is still unique to Shuttle at the time of publishing. The Shuttle XPC SB61G2 would make a good modern SFF system for the enthusiasts but it comes at quite a cost. Shuttle XPC systems are known to be among the more expensive SFF systems around. Although it is somewhat justified by all its qualities, it is still a little on the high side. Furthermore, no software or utilities were bundled with the barebone system. In light of this, the Shuttle XPC SB61G2 missed our perfect rating and but still landed itself comfortable with 4.5 Stars – an excellent rating that would still do the folks at Shuttle very proud. |
HardOCP www.hardocp.com/... 17. June 2003 | Conclusion Far and away, the SB61G2 is Shuttle’s most impressive product to date. Although the SN41G2 should receive credit for paving the road to get here, no other XPC system has done everything as well as the SB61G2. From its support for industry leading features and the latest and greatest technology to the polished modern appearance complete with a few improvements over the SN41G2, the Springdale-based Shuttle has something for everyone. For the skeptics who were holding out on the wave of small form factor systems, this new XPC makes it nearly impossible for them to make a convincing argument against these systems. (...) Whether it be in the living room, in the office, or at the local LAN party, the Shuttle SB61G2 is sure to offer top-notch performance in any application. In most every respect, the overall quality of the system was exceptional. With more features and functionality than we have ever seen in this small form factor size, the SB61G2 proves to be a potent package. Were one preparing for Half Life 2 or Doom3, they would pair this system with a retail boxed Pentium4 2.4C and be nearly guaranteed 3GHz or better. Add to this one of the latest generation graphics cards and a high quality PCI sound card and you have yourself a system which will rival any PC in the room at your next LAN event should have need of some impressive frame rates. For those looking for an endorsement, keep an eye out for us at QuakeCon as chances are, one [H] editor will be gaming with a system based on the Shuttle SB61G2 platform. |
Lost Circuits www.lostcircuits.com/... 27. May 2003 | Conclusions There is not much to conclude here, Shuttle has done it once again by delivering a flawless product that is another milestone achievement in the development of the PC platform. (...) We could go on and hilight the superior performance or even become melodramatic but none of this would add to our impression and the final verdict that the SB61G2 deserves nothing less than an editor's award. SFFTech.com www.sfftech.com/... 21. May 2003 | When Shuttle launched their SV24 about 18 months ago it wasn't the first SFF-type design ever brought to market—but it kick-started a trend that's put Shuttle in the spotlight ever since and has other manufacturers scrambling to compete. We've seen some good SFF designs from other manufacturers in the last six months, but thus far Shuttle remains the market leader—and with their latest box built around the Intel i865G (Springdale) chipset they're looking to extend that lead even further.
Translation: |
