- was wahrlich nicht oft auftritt.

HOT Hardware: "..the AV40 is a better value for gamers."

HOT Hardware
www.hothardware.com/...
15. Oct. 2001
With respect to 3D Mark 2001, the differential is totally insignificant.  Here the P4X266 chipset along with DDR SDRAM, shows that it is definitely a viable and competitive alternative to i850 board with RDRAM.  One would argue that, for the cost differential between the two platforms, the P4X266 and the AV40 is a better value for gamers. (...) In the final analysis, it is clear to see that VIA has a winner on their hands with respect to the P4X266 chipset and its DDR support for the Pentium 4. (...) The AV40 P4X266 based motherboard is an excellent representation of the kind of features and benefits that can be packed into this new DDR driven Pentium 4 platform. The board has an excellent high quality design and is extremely stable. With the "R" version of this board and its on board Promise ATA100 RAID controller, you'll have just about every bell and whistle available for the P4. Among P4X266 boards (frankly there aren't many released as of yet), we expect the AV40 to hold strong in the top of its class.

OCWorkbench: "Rating 4.2 of 5"

OC Workbench

Conclusion: rating 4,2 of 5
Shuttle AV40R is the one of the first S478 DDR P4 boards This definitely brought DDR to the Pentium 4 solution affordable. Performance is also excellent if we were to compare with RAMBUS solutions or the i845 Brookdale solution. In our tests, the AV40R is faster than the RAMBUS solutions as it's clock is a bit higher than the standard 100Mhz.

Features wise, this board has a number of important features esp. built for those who like to overclock. The large range of FSB and Voltage levels makes it one of the most tweakable boards out there in the market right now. Vcore, Vdimm, FSB all can be modified.

Installation is straightforward and there are no issues so far. Documentation is provided and the package is complete with the USB ports. Overall, it is an affordable board for a P4 system coupled with DDR.

Pros:

  • Vcore, Vdimm, FSB tweaking all within BIOS.
  • DDR solution
  • Promise RAID

VIA Hardware: "..winner: the Shuttle AV40R."

VIAHardware.com
www.viahardware.com/...
21. Sept. 2001
Conclusion: In the first VIA P4X266 roundup, we have our first winner: the Shuttle AV40R.

Shuttle thought it wise to launch a P4X266 board and a i845 board at the same time, being the first to offer SDR and DDR solutions for P4. (...) The Shuttle truly outpaces the field in the area of overclocking, offering bus speeds between 100 and 160MHz in 1MHz increments. The AV40R also offers chipset voltage, DDR voltage, and CPU voltage adjustment in BIOS, matching the overclocking options of even a Abit board. (...)

The AV40R combines a good layout, impressive featureset, great performance, and flexible overclocking support into one low-cost package. (...) Even the term "budget P4 box" would have seemed ludicrous a few months ago. But the release of the P4X266 chipset, along with Intel's aggressive price cuts, have made affordable P4 boxes with DDR memory actually attractive to the cost conscious consumer. (...) the P4X266 can be considered the best chipset for Intel's best processor (...)

DinoXPC: "Rating 10 of 10"

DinoXPC Website, Italy
www.dinoxpc.com/... (Italian)

15. Oct. 2001
Full rating: 10 of 10

These are the good things:
Bios: It's very complete, and there are lot of options to set memories (very useful for overclockers).
Stability: as english guys use to say, it's rock stable!!!
Performaces: Very good performances, especially if you are using optimized software. As we've focused on, in some cases, DDR and RIMM gap is not so evident, so the board can be a good alternative to an I850 based board.
Versatility: We have found no problems, instead of the ones we've had with RIMM types (must be pair mounted to grant a working system).
Features: A raid onboard controller allows to build a raid subsystem to gain higher performances with hard drives; onboard audio for people that want to use their machine only for professional business applications (and so, they don't need an hi-quality audio); Fan and temperature monitor (ITE Smart Guardian Utility). Optionally, you can ask for an USB 2.0 controller.
Support: The mobo has been sent us with two user manuals, one for the mobo installation and configuration, and the other one for the raid configuration: driver installation and raid creation. The Cdrom contains drivers and useful software.
Price: Shuttle's suggested price is 150 Euro (less than 300.000 italian lira) that, compared to an I850 based solution, is nearly 30% lower. Clarely, this low price is coupled with an ulterior money safe for DDR dimms (less than 30-40% compared to rimm price).

and these are the bad ones: Nothing :)

Interestingly, in Ulead, the performance delta between the i850 and the P4X266 (= AV40) is less than 1 %. In Caligari TrueSpace 4.2, the P4X266 takes a solid 13% lead over the i850. This should be enough information to base a purchase decision on. If cost factors are taken into account, the situation looks even worse for either of the Intel chipset-based boards.

I have no problem recommending the Shuttle AV40 (Rating: 91%)

Shuttle should be congratulated for making a great board when many other manufacturers won't touch this chipset. (...) if you have a Pentium 4 and want the best price/performance you can get, it is pretty evident the P4X266 is the way to go.

The layout of the AV40r is very good. (...) The BIOS of this board is where it really begins to shine. The first thing I noticed is a myriad of memory timings. (...) Shuttle offers all kinds of good overclocking options (...) the front side buses from 100-160Mhz in 1Mhz increments are very welcome. (...) The installation of this board was easy, and it was made that much easier by Shuttle's inclusion of a very well written and informative manual. (...) Overclocking on the AV40r was very easy and quite beneficial. (...) Sisoft Sandra Memory Test: In this test we can see that the Shuttle AV40r does VERY well, and actually beats the VIA reference board by quite a margin (about 20%). (...) in the MP3 Encoding: beat the RDRAM system (...) 3DMark2001: Seven points are all the separates the 850 system from the Shuttle AV40 based rig. That is not bad considering the price difference.

AV40 made on me very positive impression. (...) According to our test results about P4-based mainboards, the AV40 obtains between 90 and 100% of the speed of P4-boards with i850 chipsets, which are much more expensive. During over 20 hours of tests, the system shows no stability problems at all (...) In conclusion, I recommend Shuttle AV40. You can build a very efficient Pentium-4-system with this mainboard, what does not mean " very expensive".

Very good efficiency
Very stable
Orderly realization
Relative low price

Shuttle has done a bang up job with their AV40R.
If you wanted to jump into a Pentium4 platform board today I would have no problems at all suggesting this board to you. In our days of testing we had no real problems whatsoever. The AV40R proved to be the pinnacle of stability. The boards overall layout is smart and will suit the DIYer or enthusiast. The BIOS selections have the most wanted features that any tweaker is going to be interested in. Shuttle has proven that the P4X266 DDR chipset can stand toe-to-toe with the P4/Rambus platform and honestly I would have suggested that was a lofty goal three months ago, but it has surely been conquered. Kudos to Shuttle for building a P4 board aimed directly at the OCer and DIYer crowd, as they have done their job well.

Conclusion
I'm extremely pleased to have the option of buying a P4 with something other than RAMBUS. The AV40-R is a very awesome board. It has tons of features and its performance is outstanding. With a couple of BIOS updates, I expect to see it performing closer to the RDRAM boards soon. (...) If you are in the market for a non-RAMBUS P4 board, I would recommend the AV40-R.

PC World Norway: "Platz 1"

Von der Redaktion empfohlen:
Platz 1 - Bestes Pentium 4 Mainboard

Positiv: Gute Ausstattung mit fortschrittlicher Speicher-Technologie. Integrierter RAID-Controller, 6 USB-Ports,...

Conclusion
What makes Shuttles board somewhat espesialy interesting, is that there ain't many motherboards on the norwegian market with this chipset. From what we understand, several larger motherboard-manufactures has boards ready, but will not start mass-production before the situations between VIA and Intel have been sorted out. Manufactures which has a strong relationsship to Intel, regarding e.g. prices, access to new products and assistance for designs, does not want to jeopardise this relationship. Baiscly, the Shuttle AV40R is a very good board. Regarding the design there are some elements we don't like -- e.g. the location of some connectors. The boards performance in very good, especialy taking the
plattforms price into consideration.

+ Good performance with reasonable memory technology, integrated
RAID-controller, 6 USB ports (option for USB 2.0)

Good value and fast

You can nothing say against the . It performs most tests almost like boards with i850 chipset and is much better than boards with i845 chipset.

Penstarsys: "Overall Score: 92%"

Penstarsys

27. Sept. 2001
Overall Score: 92%
The VIA P4X266 is a definite competitor to the mighty i850 of Intel, and the price difference between the two products can be impressive. RDRAM is still about twice the cost of good DDR SDRAM, and the i850 6 layer boards are 50% higher in cost than the RAID version of the Shuttle AV40R. When all of this is put together, a comparably performing P4X266 based system can be #200 cheaper than the RDRAM/i850 based competition.

(...) very nicely laid out with excellent features, but at a cost that is significantly lower than much of the competition. The build quality of the latest Shuttle boards are among the best in the business, and the overall stability at stock speeds is second to none. The Shuttle engineers have done an outstanding job with this product, considering that it is among the first of its kind. (...) Shuttle has really raised the bar on producing high quality yet affordable motherboards. In an industry dominated by Gigabyte, Asus, and MSI (all of whom ask a sometimes significantly higher price for their products), it is nice to see a very viable (and affordable) alternative to the heavies. The overall design and quality of this product demands attention, and I think this product will receive this attention once the good word gets out.

For those wishing to use a P4 processor, but don’t want to buy or support RDRAM, then the VIA P4X266 based AV40R is one of the top choices in this small, but growing market. Both Shuttle and VIA have proven that the P4X266 can keep neck in neck with the i850.

Pros: Faster than the VIA reference P4X266, Excellent stability, Excellent features, Good layout, RAID controller, 6 USB ports, Outstanding manual, Up to date CDROM/drivers, Excellent documentation
