Pros: Good layout (+25), Easy to maneuver work environment(+25), Lot's of tweaking options (+25), Excellent performance (+25)
Cons: Weird Fan 2 connector placement (-2)

Conclusion: (...) I really like this board. It didn't miss a beat. Whatever I wanted to do on the system, always went off without a hitch, even when overclocked. After a month of abuse, I've not experienced any problems. Very stable, very smooth, very reliable. I am not one to beat around the bush in my reviews, always straightforward, and that is no different today. (...) Overclocking? Hell yes. The BIOS comes with all the options a tweaker would want. Allowing you to squeeze everything out of your system. (...) we have a 'killer' option for a very fast system. Whether it be gaming or business, it will suit you just fine. All in all, a good choice for anyone wanting performance, stability, tweaking options, and a clean layout. A great choice for businesses (such as CAD design), and an even better choice for the hardcore gamer. (...) I have no problem recommending the Shuttle AV40 to you. A good chipset for the P4 from VIA, and an excellent board from Shuttle.

Conclusion
Being the first Shuttle motherboard that was reviewed in the O² test bunker, it did a very good job at persuading me in favor of Shuttle. The P4X266 chipset has shown to be a worthy contender in the battle of the P4 chipsets (...) So is the Shuttle AV40/AV40R worth your greenies?? In my humble opinion, it definitely is. The board performs great, offers a long list of features and tweaks and it showed to be a very stable config. If you are building yourself a Pentium 4 based system, make sure you check out this board because you won't be disappointed.

P4-Chipsätze im Vergleich
Vergleich AV40R mit i845/850:

It is the first series board based on VIA P4X266. To say more, today Shuttle AV40 remains one of the few selling mainboards based on the DDR Pentium 4 chipset from VIA. Unlike MSI, Shuttle positions its Socket478 Pentium 4 mainboard with DDR SDRAM support as a solution for advanced users. Accordingly, AV40 boasts more impressive characteristics. (...) As for the performance, we should stress that Shuttle AV40 is one of the today's fastest boards on VIA P4X266. Shuttle has also catered for the overclockers' needs. BIOS Setup of AV40 includes a number of overclocking friendly functions. (...) By the way, in BIOS Setup you'll find good many other settings. We should also say that the board has no jumpers except Clear CMOS: everything else can be configured via BIOS Setup. (...)

Latency matters are of greater interest to us. The best one here is the DDR child of VIA, P4X266 with PC2100 DDR SDRAM. It implies that the memory controller of SiS645, which showed the worst latency, has a chance to be optimized. (...) SysMark2001: VIA P4X266 is a trifle ahead of SiS645, when it works with PC2100 DDR SDRAM. (...) If combined with PC2100 DDR SDRAM, SiS645 becomes nearly analogous to VIA P4X266. (...)

Hardwareluxx-Award -
Weiter so, Shuttle!

Hardwareluxx-Award
Although Shuttle AV40 comes with a new chipset, it fully exhausts its potential. It is equipped very well: we want only point out the onboard RAID and the overclocking functions. Partially, the test results were much better than we have expected. In some tests it is faster than the i850 chipset and in many tests it is only few percent close to the RDRAM chipset. Again, Shuttle have made a good job with its P4X266 board and offers a high quality mainboard to the market. This is the alternative for those, who look for a Pentium 4 board and don't want to pay a lot of money for RDRAM. With good performance one receives an almost perfect board.

Conclusion
P4X266 is a good chipset with very high memory bandwith, quite not as high as the RDRAM but pretty close. The card is equipped with all standard functions, but there could have been some extra features. The BIOS is very good and there are setting for everything. The card is perfect for those who do not want to go for the RDRAM solution, but think the SDRAM is a bit old and slow. The card works perfectly and it's very stable.

Rating: 9 of 10

Comment of the editor: Impressive! The AV40 is THE motherboard to use today with the Pentium 4. Great performance, stability and overclocking friendly feature.

PROs
Excellent Price

Fully featured BIOS
Bags of headroom for future processors
Uses easily available and cheap DDR SDRAM
Nice layout
Good manual

In all honesty I think P4 users or potential users should be quite excited about this board. By pairing up the bandwidth hungry P4 with cheap-to-buy DDR we at last have a platform that allows the mighty Intel processor to flex a bit of muscle without having to pay a fortune for a board and memory to keep it happy. (...) Shuttle have done just about everything right with the AV40R (...) The AV40R has remained fast, stable and competent through nearly two weeks of trials, a testament to the engineering guys over there. (...) If ever there was a good reason to buy into the P4 arena then the AV40R is it. (...) we've now entered a new phase and Shuttle with their AV40R are right at the front spearheading the move. It could be an exciting 2002 for the P4.

VIA has done an excellent job in producing a Pentium 4 chipset that performs very close to, if not higher than Intel's i850 chipset. With similar performance combined with low price, it would be unwise to purchase an i850 motherboard over a P4X266 board unless you require the added memory bandwidth that RDRAM provides. (...) The AV40R features all the overclocking and tweaking options you could ever want in a motherboard and provides slightly better performance than the ACorp 4VPX266A. How can Shuttle Spacewalker AV40R get the Atomic Hot award?
Shuttle Spacewalker AV40R is the first motherboard for Pentium 4 (socket 478) CPU with DDR RAM and RAID features, build in VIA P4X266 chipset. According to Ashok's conclusion, " the i850 with 256MB of PC800 RDRAM scored 3.54, which is significantly less than the 4.27 scored with the P4X266-based Spacewalker AV40R". Which one would you choose for P4 CPU? We sincerely reckon you to optimise the P4 CPU via Shuttle Spacewalker AV40R.

We were more than overwelmed with Shuttles new AV40 which features VIAs new P4X266 chipset. Shuttle seems to have delivered a very stable DDR SDRAM platform for Intels Pentium 4 processors and a very good price/performance ratio. Shuttles AV40 has everything what a systemintegrator might need for a future system based upon Intels Pentium 4 processors. Therefore we award the Shuttle AV40 with our HARDINFO recommend award.

Overall 5 of 5 - Editor's Choice
  • Excellent Performance
  • The latest VIA P4X266 chipset
  • Onboard IDE RAID
  • Uses DDR Ram
  • Good overclocking options
  • FSB,Voltage and Multiplier Adjustments

I must tell you that I am absolutely shocked and astonished by it's performance. It's the fastest board I've reviewed to date, the AV40R is truely an amazing board from Shuttle. (...) The extra features and goodies include USB leads, extra ATA-100 IDE cables, onboard sound and onboard IDE RAID. In the BIOS there are plenty of options for overclocking, these include the ability to adjust memory timings, FSB, multiplier and voltages. I managed to overclocked my Pentium 4 (1.7Ghz) to 1908Mhz (17x112) with rock solid stability ... what more can I ask for (...) It's a shame to see that many manufacturers have declined to use the P4X266 chipset ... all because of legal issues. This may result in the lack of boards that use this chipset. (...) Shuttle has convinced us that the AV40R truely a winner for the time being. Final words. Excellent performance from an excellent board. If you want a Pentium 4 motherboard which uses DDR ram, and the performance to match, then the Shuttle AV40R is your answer. Shuttle has contiuned its award winning streak with the AV40R ... Truely amazing.
