XPC SN45G and SN45GV2

The silver beauty from Shuttle is based on Nvidias Nforce 2 Ultra 400 chipset and works with an Athlon XP/3000+ almost as fast as the more expensive systems with Athlon 64 or Pentium 4. Its very low price (...) make it to the undisputed price/performance winner (...) The SN45G measures only 20x18.5x30cm, same like the SK83G [which is the overall winner] and offers similar craftsmanship. The heatpipe cooling has agreeable low noise. An Audigy 2 soundcard matches, but there is already a 5.1 Soundstorm onboard solution, which makes a good job. The AGP8x slot is suitable for almost every 3D-graphics which uses only a single slot. Conclusion: The clear price/performance winner! For just 220 Euro you can get the barebone SN45G, which is absolutely suited for gaming and which offers excellent craftsmanship.

(...) Überhaupt merkt man es den XPC Würfeln an, das Shuttle den Job schon ein Weilchen macht. (...) Aber sie liefern das rundeste Konzept mit den wenigsten Schwächen und wissen, wie man mögliche Stolpersteine umgeht (...). 

This machine is a great platform for Athlon XP CPU and if you want XPC and want to be able to plug FSB 400 CPUs up to 3200+ this is definitely a system that you should consider. (...) SPDIF sound will let you connect your nice 5.1 speakers to this machine. The BIOS will let you overclock your CPU which gives this PC a new dimension. We set 3000+ to 3200+ and gained some serious speed notches and a 400MHz system bus counts in the performance game. Who know?(...) With an AIW card you can turn this little box into a real multimedia system. It's highly desirable for people that like nice small systems that will fit in every home and office and still give some overclocking flexibility.

Klein, schnell und praktisch – zu diesem Urteil sind wir nach dem ausgiebigen Test des Shuttle SN45G Mini PCs gekommen. (...) mit einer sehr guten Verarbeitung und einem exzellenten Design. Daher eignet sich der Barbone auch als Wohnzimmer PC. Die silberne Front veredelt das ganze noch ein bisschen. Positiv ist uns außerdem die oben genannte Performance ins Auge gefallen. Man kann wirklich nicht meckern. Die Leistung ist mit einem normalen bzw. gewöhnlichen Komplett-PC vergleichbar, oder sogar schneller. Abgerundet wird der positive Eindruck durch den großzügigen Lieferumfang mit dem Kupferspacer und dem anderen Zubehör. Außerdem lobenswert sind die vielen Anschlussmöglichkeiten, die das Gerät bietet, wie z.B. sechs USB Schnittstellen oder auch die Erweiterungsmöglichkeit durch PCI oder AGP Karten. (...) Jeder der einen schicken PC fürs Wohnzimmer oder für seinen Schreibtisch haben möchte, ist mit dem Shuttle XPC SN45G sicherlich gut bedient. DVD-Audio PC im Eigenbau
Angesichts der Tatsache, dass ein Audio-DVD-tauglicher Player mindestens 500-600 Euro kostet, bietet sich als Alternative natürlich auch der Bau eines preiswerten PCs an, der für das Wohnzimmer mit einem schicken Barebone-Gehäuse versehen wird. (...)

Wir haben für Sie zwei Audio-DVD-PCs zusammengestellt - eine Komplettlösung mit DVD-Brenner und eine Sparversion ohne DVD-Brenner, kleiner Festplatte und Direc tX 7-Grafikkarte. Als Basis verwenden wir das Shuttle XPC SN41G2*-Gehäuse mit integriertem Nvidia nForce2 Mainboard für AMD Prozessoren. Dieser fällt nicht nur klein und schick aus, sondern bietet auch eine leise und zudem passive Kühlung des Prozessors. Auch die Chipsatzkühler kommen ohne lärmende Lüfter aus. Der Shuttle XPC ist auch mit Mainboard für Intel-CPUs erhältlich. Da es bei der DVD-Audio-Wiedergabe nicht auf die CPU-Leistung ankommt, setzen wir einen preiswerten Athlon XP-Prozessor ein. Auch die Garfikkarte muss nicht für 3D-Spiele ausgelegt sein-hier reicht ein älteres DirectX 8.1 oder sogar DirectX 7-Modell aus. Gleiches gilt für die Festplatte - selbst ein Modell mit 20 GB läßt sich ohne Probleme verwenden. Damit Sie nicht nur DVDs abspielen, sondern auch gleichzeitig CDs und DVDs brennen können, haben wir uns für einen Multiformat-Brenner entschieden. Alternativ, wie in der Sparversion des DVD-Audio-PC, lässt sich auch nur ein DVD-Laufwerk einsetzen. (...)

Shuttle Inc. is (...) the leader in the SFF revolution today, having produced both stylish yeet high performance XPC's for both Intel and AMD CPUs. The SN45G (...) is a must-have for any overclockers or enthusiasts, wishing to have a SFF PC with all the overclocking potential.

Impressively, the XPC held up like a pro through it all and never once gave me any trouble. (...) I'm incredibly excited about all the power bundled into a little box. (...) It is only a matter of time before businesses and corporations catch on to the XPC. Any network administrator who doesn't jump on the XPC for their company's next desktop upgrade is completely out of their mind. Dump that oversized tower that takes up all of your desktop space and get the XPC! Heck, I even wish I had an XPC at work! I may just sneak this one in... Besides being the best desktop solution I have ever seen, the XPC is the perfect choice for the home. Not just as a workstation for mom and pop, but for the kids to game on as well. Throw out the Xbox...I'm serious. For the price, you just can't beat the capabilities of the XPC. Hardcore gaming, office application, you name it, the XPC can do it all. Yes, I am ranting and raving over the XPC, but I have a damn good reason to. Why you ask? Because, the SN45G XPC is the best product I've seen come out of the computer industry for years. Not to mention the best product Shuttle has ever produced. As you see, I'm giving the Shuttle SN45G XPC our highest rating ever for any product. This is because I truly believe in the XPC and what it has to offer.

Als erstes möchten wir Shuttle für das SN45G ein großes Lob aussprechen. Es bietet alles, was man braucht, und noch ein bisschen mehr. Sehr gefallen haben die vielen Anschlussmöglichkeiten, die Systemstabilität und die vielfältigen Optionen im BIOS. Das alles halten wir für ein so kleines System nicht unbedingt als muss. Wie unsere Benchmarks zeigen, kann es ohne Probleme mit einem großem System mithalten. (...) Hübscher als viele andere PC's ist es auch anzusehn. Gebürstetes Aluminium, die Plexiglasfront und das alles hochwertig verarbeitet! (...) Übrigens ist für das SN45G, wie auch allen anderen Shuttle XPCs, erwähnenswertes Zubehör wie z.B. eine Tragetasche oder Wireless LAN erhältlich. (...) Insgesamt ist Shuttle mit dem XPC SN45G also sehr guter Wurf gelungen an dem man nichts wirklich großes aussetzen kann. Damit verdient es sich die "Empfehlung der Redaktion"

Shuttle SN45G has truly astonished us for its aesthetic and technical characteristics: light, sturdy and discreet. Thanks to its aluminum chassis and its compact dimensions, these Mini-PC binds together superlative technical characteristics that render it to be an appreciated solution for office employ. (...)  Also optimal configurable and rich of BIOS options. Space is incredible, how much a little machine can reside to obtain superlative velocity performances(...).

There is certainly no shortage of ports on the XPC, despite its shoebox size. (...) The test results for the XPC-SN45G did astonish us a little, however, because we would not have been surprised by a few trade-offs in terms of performance or stability in view of the compactness of the system. In all of the benchmarks the XPC ranks right up among the leaders, and there are also useful overclocking qualities incorporated in the BIOS. It's a great pick for anyone who wants a "portable" nForce2 system. 

The conclusion turns out well at the sight of the many positive impressions.There would be the high flexibility, the weight with integrated hardware is ideal to visit LAN parties. A combination with the right TFT screen attracts attention.The performance for a "dwarf" of the PC is very good. With the integrated mainboard with nForce 2 400 ultra chipset is this PC advanced and functions with the latest AMD prozessors(200 FSB). The mainboard disposes of dual channel. (...)A reasonable step is to leave the onboard- grafic card. Because these grafic card disposes of a bad performance The barebone is interesting for people who play a lo of games. If you want a small, easy transportable and still sufficient case, choose the Barebone SN45G. 

Auch optisch konnten wir uns einmal mehr in den Shuttle Cube verlieben - wenn wir die vergangenen Shuttle Barebone Tests Revue passieren lassen, war dies eigentlich Mal für Mal so. In diesem Test besticht das System wieder durch seinen sehr edlen Aluminium-Look, durch die abgerundeten Kanten und die Front aus Acrylglas. Auch das von Shuttle angebotene Zubehör wie farbige Gehäusedeckel, Fernbedienung, Tragetasche oder Paralell-Port sind wieder zu haben. Sehr schön natürlich auch auf dem folgenden Foto zu erkennen sind die farbigen LEDs in der Front.

Als wirklich angenehm ist natürlich auch die Lautstärke des Systems einzustufen. (...) Die CPU Kühlung ist auch hier wieder, ähnlich wie bei den anderen Cubes, wunderschön leise. Zwar fährt der Lüfter nach dem Start immernoch einmal kurz auf volle Drehzahl hoch, beruhigt sich aber mit dem Erscheinen des Post-Screens wieder und ist auch im Lastbetrieb noch auf einem sehr angenehmen Geräuschpegel.

Nicht zu vergessen ist natürlich die Erwähnung der Performance: Keines Weges braucht sich das SN45G hinter seinen Konkurrenten mit nForce2 (Ultra400) oder vor seinen Brüdern, dem MN31N und dem AN35N zu verstecken. Die Performance erreichte das selbe Level, welches wir schon von den anderen Shuttle Mainboards kannten (...)

Auch mit dem Overclocking hat Shuttle nicht zu viel versprochen - es ist tatsächlich möglich, aus einem solchen Zwerg noch mehr herauszuquetschen, als ohnehin schon in ihm steckt. Wir erreichten einen FSB von 220MHz (...) Multiplikator, FSB, DIMM-, AGP- und VCore Spannung sind einstellbar. (...)

Alles in allem ein toller Cube, wie man es von Shuttle gewohnt ist - und auf eine Geforce FX kann man notfalls auch verzichten. Aus diesem Grund gibts unseren Hardwareluxx-Award.

Even for the optical appearance we could fall in love with the Shuttle cube - when we remember the other Shuttle barebone reviews in the past, then we must state, that this was in all cases true. In this test the system impresses through its very noble aluminum look, the rounded corners and the acrylic front. Again, also accessories are available from Shuttle: colorful cover, remote control, carry bag and parallel port.

Very nice are the colorful LEDs in the front panel. The low noise of this system can be considered as very pleasant. (...) even under full load the noise has a pleasantly low level.

Performance-wise - by any means the SN45G needs not to hide itself from its competition with nFroce2 (Ultra 400) chipset (...)

Also has Shuttle promised not too much with the overclocking features - in fact you can tweak this dwarf to even more performance than you already obtain under normal conditions. We reached a FSB frequency of 220MHz (...) you can adjust multiplier, FSB and voltage of DIMM, AGP and VCore. (...)

Overall it is a terrific cube, as usual with Shuttle (...). For this reason we give our HardwareLuxx award.

Conclusions
As you've seen, the SN45G delivers excellent performance for an Athlon XP-based system and decent performance versus Pentium 4-based setups, as well. In fact, the SN45 has two main competitors, and they're both from Shuttle. Equipped with a Pentium 4 3.0GHz, the XPC SB61G2 performs as well as or better than the Athlon XP 3200+-based SN45, and there's always the possibility of dropping in a P4 3.2GHz chip. It's close, but the fastest XPC overall is definitely the SB61G2.
Then there's the SN45G's close cousin, the SN41G2. You'll have to give up voltage adjustments and 400MHz bus speeds with the SN41G2, but our benchmarks have show pretty clearly than an Athlon XP 3000+ on a 333MHz bus is nearly as fast as a 3200+ chip on a 400MHz bus, anyhow. In return, the SN41G2 will give you the nForce2 IGP's downright decent built-in graphics and that swanky, industrial G2 case design.
Personally, in as high-style a product as an XPC system, I might be tempted to go with the SN41G2 simply because I prefer its looks. However, the SN45G's higher performance, lower cost, and better overclocking options are hard to pass up, especially for desktop system that's something more than your basic toaster.

(...) dies ist ein weiteres feines Beispiel, wie Geschwindigkeit und Leistungsmerkmale in ein Mini-Design gepackt werden können. Es scheint, daß es für Shuttle kein Verharren gibt.

Conclusion
Shuttle continues to put out excellent small form factors and the SN45G is no exception. The use of the new nForce 2 Ultra 400 is a no brainer as it brings improved performance and lower cost to high end of their small form factor line. That saved money can be spent on a better video card, or for accessories. (...)
